Meet the Expert session

At-Bristol delivers a variety of events and activities involving practising scientists and engineers as well as many other experts including animators, historians, chefs, cricketers...

This has a two way purpose: both to provide professionals with opportunities to engage and develop skills of working with public audiences, and also for members of the public to meet practicing professionals gaining an insight into their work and career inspiration.

During each school holiday period we operate Meet the expert, an informal event which takes place with a family audience in our exhibition space. We are open to a variety of formats but most commonly these are drop-in table-top activities or presented shows led by professionals.

Recent Meet the expert activities have included engineers from Project Bloodhound, the 1000mph car, who presented an interactive show based on their work and staffed a stand in our exhibition.

We also hold Special theme days, all day events for school groups where professionals can enhance the student experience. We run forensics theme days where members of the police talk with students about the ways the police employ DNA techniques.

We are also open to other opportunities for experts and the public to meet - both schools and family audiences.

If you would like to be involved with any of these events, please e-mail the education team.

Science Fact

"I really enjoyed doing the Cafe. It was certainly challenging, but the audience was interactive and engaged with the discussion the entire evening. I think they learned far more than they would have at a normal talk - and I certainly learned a lot more about the public perception of global change and geology. I'd recommend it to any academic who wants a better understanding of how the public views his or her research." Richard Pancost, Reader in Biogeochemistry, University of Bristol
